I bought this because I wanted to learn the drums. I have never played any instrument in my 60 years on this planet so I didn't want to spend a lot on a kit before I knew if I could play. I had to buy new heads and cymbals, those that came with the kit were no good, even I could hear they sounded awful. Long story short this kit gave me hope that I could at least learn the drums and I am now taking lessons. They are good enough for now and the sound is acceptable. It makes a good first kit and as much as I now wish I had spent more on a Yamaha or Mapex kit doing so would have been insanity having never before picked up a drumstick. The new Meinl cymbals and Remo heads I added bumped up the price considerably but was still cheaper than buying a better kit. Besides when I do buy a better kit I will buy a shell pack and still have the cymbals to use with it.I purchased my gammon set about 4 months ago, first of all the assembly instructions provided in the box are worthless. I also picked up Tommy Igoe's getting started on drums dvd, which walks you through assembly step by step.I'm going to go through everything about this drum set piece by piece, because some things are great and some things are terrible. The drums shells themselves are made of nato wood, which has similar sonic properties to mahogany so you're going to get good lows out of you're bass drum and floor tom but the rack toms could sound much better. The biggest problem i have with this kit are the bass drum spurs: they aren't quite long enough and I've had to set them on top of a bunched up throw blanket to raise the drum up to where it's supposed to be and keep it from sliding forward on me. Also the rack toms only have 5 lugs each, making it more difficult to tune.I really hate the sound of the snare drum, it's hard to describe but it's most likely due to the choice of nato wood again. I replaced it after about a month with a poplar one that sounds worlds better, at the very least it needs a better head put on it.If the cymbals are a big selling point for you prepare to be disappointed. At first i thought that since it's just me and my friends jamming in the basement i wouldn't care if they didn't sound very good, but not only do these sound bad, the hi-hats actually hold you back when you start trying to experiment with them. They don't vibrate, they wobble, and it's impossible to learn certain techniques with them because you can't tell if you're doing it right or not if it sounds like crap no matter what. Also, the bottom hi-hat started to buckle around the hole after only a few days of playing normally. If you can stand them, great, but if not you're going to find yourself spending around [...] on one of the starter packs from meinl, zildjian, or sabian...The hardware that comes with it is double braced and sturdy. The cymbal stand doesn't have a plastic sleeve, but instead has two small metal sleeves that may cause harm to your cymbals and the threads on it are a nonstandard size so you won't be able to screw anything onto it other than the wingnut that comes with it. The Hi-hat stand is nice, you can rotate the legs around for a double pedal to fit if you get creative and remove a screw, the spring is already feeling like it's losing its bounce though. I have absolutely no complaints about the snare stand, it does the job perfectly with no issues. If you weigh over 150 lbs be prepared to buy a new drum throne too, I weigh 180 and the legs bent up under my weight and the vertical post had to be bent back into shape daily until the whole thing came apart altogether.Looking back I most likely would have been better off buying a shell pack for the same price and getting the hardware separately. I would have paid roughly the same price and would have ended up with a nicer kit. Sure, it's an all inclusive pack, but I ended up having to replace almost all of it... Look at this as a shell pack rather than as a whole kit when comparing prices, and make you're decision with that in mind.Very Handsome drum set for the price. Simple assembly / set up . As can be expected for the price the Cymbals are not the greatest. It was in the best condition of any large package I have ever received. Everything was scratch free and intact. Absolutely every piece accounted for .TOTALLY pleasurable ON - LINE EXPERIENCE ! I recommend Amazon for Music Instrument needs over getting ripped off from Musicians Friend and Guitar Center.I am not a drummer nor am I a professional musician so let's get that out of the way. I bought this for my kids who suddenly became interested in guitars and drumming. The item was as described, and it is indeed a full-sized drum set (according to a friend of mine who is a musician and knows about drums). From a non-musician perspective:1. Love that the set comes complete to get you going as soon as you finish assembling out of the box.2. Snare came fully assembled (and somewhat tuned)3. Assembly was a breeze (for a non DIY dad). My 9yo daughter helped me put it together and it took us under 3 hours from unboxing to hitting our first "drum solo".4. I have no knowledge of tuning drums so I just played it by ear and listened to the sound of each drum to get a "tone" I am comfortable with without it sounding like an echoing toy drum.5. Fit and finish of the product looks very well made for a "cheap" set.6. Cymbals are OK - not sure what that means really.7. I added a pillow inside the bass to give it more "oomph" - seems to do the trick.8. Adjusting the drum heads are as easy as inserting the included tool and going on a "STAR" pattern to tighten or loosen the nuts.9. Comes with DVD instructions but didn't need it because there were plenty of online videos I found - highly recommended to watch first before tackling the assembly.10. Started playing with the different "levels" of "stretching" the drum heads as my kids where playing them so we are now playing "in tune" sort of.11. I bought a "stress mat" from Harbor Freight tools so I can sit the drums perfectly without messing with our wood floors. From my professional drummer friend:1. Kit is amazing for the price.2. Definitely a beginner's drum set. Not a toy but a serious beginners drum set.3. For the price, it sounds okay, so long as you don't decide to take it to stage.4. Easily upgradeable to quality drum heads and cymbals.5. Able to "tune" it without issues and fit and finish is pretty impressive for this price range.6. Don't expect to sound exactly in-tune with professional drum kits you hear being played in the songs you hear on the radio.7. Bass pedal is not designed for "experts" so be gentle, if that's even possible with drummers.8. I'd buy this if I had very limited budget and want to practice at home or get started.9. I had my reservations and definitely lowered expectations being that I am a seasoned drummer but I was impressed by the decent sound that comes out of this drum set.10. Definitely, a great buy!
